Hey there!

Welcome to my very first blog post! I'm thrilled to share my exciting new adventure with you - diving into the world of piano. I cannot believe I'm actually going through and writing a blog about it but here we are. 

My Lifelong Love for Music

Music has always been my haven, a source of calm and connection. Its presence has been a constant in my life, offering solace during the storms and companionship in quiet moments. I often find myself lost in its embrace, especially during those long walks. With my headphones on, the world fades away, and I'm transported by the melodies.

There's something about the way music resonates within me, reaching places that words alone can't touch. It's like a gentle hand, soothing my worries and lifting my spirits. And now, as I embark on this piano journey, I'm ready to deepen that connection. The thought of creating my own melodies, of feeling the keys beneath my fingertips, fills me with a sense of anticipation and wonder.

Following my dreams

Ever since watching the Philadelphia Orchestra, where I felt an overwhelming sense of calm and joy, I'd been drawn into the world of classical music and lately, the thought of learning the piano had been on my mind. A recent trip to India made me think even more about this. While I was there, I talked with my Massi, who was worried about retiring because she thought she'd have nothing to do after retirement and didn't want to feel idle.

I asked her if she had any hobbies she'd always wanted to try. Her eyes lit up, and she told me about how she'd always wanted to learn Kathak. Seeing her still hesitate to take steps towards her dream made me realize something important. I didn't want to reach a point in life where I looked back and wished I had done something I always wanted to do and yet didn't have the courage to follow through. 

What to Expect

This blog grants you an all-access pass to my piano journey's backstage. If you share my love for music or are intrigued by the art of learning an instrument, you're in for a treat. Here, I'll be your guide through the ups and downs, giving you an unfiltered look at my practice sessions, breakthroughs, and the melodies that emerge. 

I don't think I'd able to stick to fixed schedule while publishing the blog just because of many other engagements in life like work but you can expect atleast weekly blogs and some fillers in between where I share photos, videos or even just notes.

But this isn't just for curious minds—it's also my personal journal. A diary where I'll trace my progress. So, if you're curious, enthusiastic, or simply intrigued by the path of musical exploration, feel free to catch up anytime on it.

[Thoughts/ Progress/ Mildly Interesting] Still practicing the next song and singing! TMI alert.

Finally found some time to update my blog, its been a while. I've been practicing Over the Rainbow for the past week. The difficulty of just learning a song has increased significant, think adding chords and chord sounds in both hands, practicing jumps and adding damper pedal. My repertoire at this point is 4 minutes long, I think. So in my last class this previous Thursday, I wanted to add singing to my songs. I guess why not right? Plus I kind of wanted to get as much out of a class as possible. I'd been trying singing in my head and wanted to know if I could actually sing as well so I slyly asked him to teach me to sing in key a bit as well. Honestly, I didn't do as bad. I could sing notes and get my voice to blend in with them. It also boosted my confidence a lot! [Thoughts/ Progress/ Mildy Interesting] Integrating chord sounds and playing using fake sheet. It's getting hard.

Last couple of weeks have been interesting. Soon after finishing Bagatelle, I also completed Melody in G by Ludvig Schytte. Instead of doing a song a week, I was able to wrap it up in 2 - 3 days. So we decided to move on to "Over the rainbow" which has been one of my favorite sweet song. But the bigger thing is when playing you can make play it as advanced as you like. What do I mean by that? Okay so now instead of hitting just the C-major chord if the sheet tells you to everytime. You shift it to it's first inversion the next beat and the second inversion after which leads to lot of hand jumping. And I don't know my chords by heart which makes it incredibly difficult and overwhelming. That's just the left hand. Earlier the melody in the right hand would usually be a single note but that has changed. I can still do the single note but a better way to play it is - playing the octave of the note. [Progress/ Boring] Week 4: Lightly Row, hand independence, chords, new pieces (4 classes down)

After the third class, where I played Morning Song to my instructor and he was fairly impressed. He taught me A, F, G chords. He asked to sight read and play Lightly Row which is a children's rhyme and I sucked at it. It left me quite disappointed. Morning Song was a success because of playing it as a 10 finger co-ordination and treating both hands as a system than independently instead when asked to sight read and keep a melodic(?) accompaniment; yeah I was pretty terrible at it. Playing with just L.H. or just R.H. is way easier than playing both together that really brings up a much discussed topic is there even a thing as independent hands or is it always just coordination. Well I firmly believe hands can and do move independently except it just takes some (a lot) practice. Through the week until the fourth class, I did practice Lightly row but more importantly did more hand drills to move them independently and I am convinced with enough practice I can achieve it.
